An all-time classic feature has been given a stunning treatment by MGM, with only the audio issues preventing them earning top marks. If the R1 edition includes the original mono soundtrack, as promised, with slightly superior box-art, then it really will be one of the finest DVD releases of all-time, as every other aspect of the set is immaculate. The transfer is possibly the finest restoration job I’ve encountered (beating both Elite’s ‘Night of the Living Dead’ and Paramount’s ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’) and the supplements offer insights into the film and Leone, previously unavailable. It may be worth waiting a month or so for confirmation of the R1 specifications to see if the audio aspect of the set is re-evaluated, but even so, as it stands, this set comes highly recommended as one of the finest treatments of an all-time classic ever committed to DVD.
